Ena is an orchestral piece created for a specially assembled world music orchestra, blending jazz and chamber music with traditions from Greek, Turkish, Balkan, and Arabic music, often associated with the makam genre. Composed by Yiorgos Bereris, and performed by six musicians, this work explores musical unity, bringing together diverse traditions into a cohesive whole.
The Greek word Ena (meaning "one") symbolizes this fusion—demonstrating how makam, classical, and jazz music can interweave seamlessly. The ensemble, featuring clarinet, violin, duduk, percussion, piano, double bass, flute, and cello, unites musicians from different backgrounds to share a common musical language.
Currently a work in progress, the project follows a period of collaboration where Greek, French, Turkish, and Iranian musicians have been refining and shaping the music together.
Ena is een orkestwerk geschreven voor een speciaal samengesteld wereldmuziekensemble. Het verenigt jazz en kamermuziek met Griekse, Turkse, Balkaanse en Arabische tradities, waaronder de makam-muziek. Gecomponeerd door Yiorgos Bereris, en op deze avond uitgevoerd door seven muzikanten, verkent dit stuk muzikale eenheid door diverse stijlen samen te brengen in een harmonieus geheel.
De naam Ena (één in het Grieks) symboliseert deze fusie—een naadloze verweving van makam, klassiek en jazz. De groep, bestaande uit klarinet, viool, duduk, percussie, piano, contrabas, fluit en cello, brengt musici uit verschillende achtergronden samen in een gedeelde muzikale taal.
Het project is nog in ontwikkeling en groeit verder door samenwerking tussen Griekse, Franse, Turkse en Iraanse musici.
