In their single Velatori de Consuelet (A Song for Consuelet’s Wake), Xaloq pays tribute to Pau’s grandmother, whose influence deeply shaped his love for popular music and culture. Written just months before her passing, the song serves as a tender farewell that reflects on aging and the inevitable approach of death.
For this unique concert at Tante Nino, you’ll step into the warmth of Consuelet’s home. The space will be transformed into a cozy setting, resembling the comfort of a grandmother’s living room. Her voice and songs will fill the air, and you’ll even have the chance to taste some of her delicious recipes. To carry a piece of this intimate evening, you will take a publication home with you, featuring her stories, recipes, and translated song lyrics.
This concert will also mark the presentation of Xaloq’s debut album, Quan veja que ja no cante—a journey through the País Valencià unfolded through stories of death, grief and revolution.
Artist Bio:
Xaloq is an international quintet based in Rotterdam (Netherlands). The band, founded by the Valencian saxophonist Pau Jordà, explores and reshapes Valencian folk music from the perspective of jazz and free improvisation.
Since its creation, Xaloq has performed on several stages in the Netherlands and the Iberian Peninsula, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, North Sea Roundtown and Laantaren Venster in Rotterdam.
At the end of 2023, the band released their first single “Bolero de Guadassuar”, an original arrangement of this traditional Valencian bolero.
On February 28th of 2025 Xaloq will release their debut album “Quan veja que ja no cante” (When I can’t sing no more), their proposal to revisit the Valencian traditional music in their own unique way.
In hun single Velatori de Consuelet (Een lied voor Consuelet’s wake) brengt Xaloq een eerbetoon aan Pau’s grootmoeder, wiens invloed zijn liefde voor volksmuziek en -cultuur diep heeft gevormd. Geschreven slechts enkele maanden voor haar overlijden, dient het nummer als een teder afscheid dat reflecteert op ouder worden en de onvermijdelijke nadering van de dood.
Voor dit bijzondere concert bij Tante Nino stap je binnen in de warmte van Consuelet’s huis. De ruimte wordt omgetoverd tot een knusse setting, die de gezelligheid van een oma’s woonkamer uitstraalt. Haar stem en liederen vullen de lucht, en je krijgt zelfs de kans om enkele van haar heerlijke recepten te proeven. Om een stukje van deze intieme avond mee naar huis te nemen, ontvang je een publicatie met haar verhalen, recepten en vertaalde songteksten.
Dit concert markeert ook de presentatie van Xaloq’s debuutalbum Quan veja que ja no cante—een muzikale reis door het País Valencià, ontvouwd in verhalen over dood, rouw en revolutie.
Over Xaloq
Xaloq is een internationaal kwintet gevestigd in Rotterdam (Nederland). De band, opgericht door de Valenciaanse saxofonist Pau Jordà, verkent en herinterpreteert de Valenciaanse volksmuziek vanuit het perspectief van jazz en vrije improvisatie. Sinds hun oprichting heeft Xaloq op verschillende podia in Nederland en het Iberisch Schiereiland gestaan, waaronder het North Sea Jazz Festival, North Sea Round Town en LantarenVenster in Rotterdam.
Eind 2023 bracht de band hun eerste single Bolero de Guadassuar uit, een originele bewerking van deze traditionele Valenciaanse bolero.
