BAD DOG is a Hammond organ trio with a distinctly Australian spirit – equal parts playful and wild and grounded in the earthen roots of the Hammond organ tradition. Drawing on the deep pocket of soul jazz and the salty air of surf culture, BAD DOG moves fluidly between larrikinism and a modern jazz sensibility that belies the individual members’ multi-award-winning expertise.

Dr Steve Barry is a pianist, composer, educator and the Program Leader for Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Hailed as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers”, his work oscillates between contemporary jazz, art music, free improvisation and musical theatre. Barry’s 2023 album In the Waves – featuring drummer Eric Harland and saxophonist Will Vinson – was awarded 4.5 stars in the Weekend Australian and praised by the Sydney Morning Herald as “...the finest instalment to date of the pianist’s bristling musical intelligence, rhythmic mutability, melodic flair and compositional gifts.”
Dr Roger Manins is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Auckland, co-founder and Artistic Director of CJC Creative Jazz Club Aotearoa, and co-Artistic Director of the Auckland Jazz Festival. His 2019 album GRG67 received the Aotearoa New Zealand Music Awards prize for Best Jazz Artist.
Gregory Eric Smith is a Canadian jazz drummer and composer based in Rotterdam. His work blends jazz, groove, and electronics with an experimental edge. In 2024, he released In Search of Bo Star with his Vortex Kollectief, featuring Andrew Moreno, Jonathan Ho, Jonathan Haffner, and Maïmouna. Developed through live try-outs the project led to performances in Rotterdam, Berlin, and beyond.
Active across the European jazz scene, Smith also composes for theatre and continues to explore new forms of expression within and beyond jazz.
BAD DOG is een Hammond-orgeltrio met een uitgesproken Australisch karakter – even speels als wild, en stevig geworteld in de aardse traditie van het Hammondorgel. BAD DOG put uit de diepe grooves van soul jazz en de zilte lucht van de surfcultuur, en beweegt zich soepel tussen ongepolijste lolbroekerij en een moderne jazzgevoeligheid die verraadt dat de bandleden stuk voor stuk gelauwerde muzikanten zijn.

Zijn werk beweegt zich tussen hedendaagse jazz, kunstmuziek, vrije improvisatie en muziektheater.
